THE QUESTION EVERYONE HAS
Zombie-virus vs Coronavirus: Which One Is Deadlier?
Uncertainty, a non-existent cure, mayhem, etc many similitudes as well as differences between this hypothetical zombie virus and the new coronavirus. But which one is deadlier?
Many people are comparing this pandemic to movies like Zombieland or World War Z… but is it a fair comparison? Continue reading to know it.
Let's start by comparing several features for both viruses (table 1).
So, on a basic comparison, a zombie-virus will be better as we can easily see who is infected or even kill them. Plus coronavirus does not only spread by bitting but also by air. This makes Covid-19 even more spreadable and dangerous.
So, in this basic comparison, we consider that living with someone that has coronavirus is way worse than living with a zombie.
The main treatment against zombies is a bullet. But you could also use any type of weapons like a knife, machete, baseball bat or a katana you may have as decoration for your house.
Meanwhile, protection against coronavirus is a mask. And the problem is that there is a shortage of masks at the moment. Unlike the gun market, these mask market is not prepared for a high demand.
This was an easy comparison as we treat zombies by killing them using guns and we treat Covid-19 infected people by using an inefficient mask. This means that even though Covid-19 has a much lower death rate, exterminating all zombies would be easier than exterminating coronavirus.
How could this “movie” end
I am going to consider a popular Zombie movie, a series and a videogame and comment on how the story would have changed with coronavirus.
- The Last Of Us. The plot of “The Last Of Us” is based on Ellie and her friend Riley getting bitten by a zombie. Riley dies from the disease while Ellie does not, becoming the first immune human to the zombie disease. Then she starts a journey with Joel to go to a center where they can examine her and create a vaccine. Being the disease coronavirus, Riley and Ellie would have been infected similarly and Ellie would have been the only survivor. But instead, everyone would have assumed that Ellie is asymptomatic, ignoring the fact that she could be immune and thus, never discovering a cure for the disease.
- Zombieland. This movie shows the love story of Colombus. He starts being a geeky guy that had never kissed a girl and ended up falling in love. Adding coronavirus to this scenario, Colombus would have died early, when he left a girl into his apartment. She had been bitten already. Adding coronavirus, he would have never noticed that she was infected and, thus, he would have gotten infected too. This is why you should not use Tinder these days.
- The Walking Dead. Rick (the main character) walked through an infected hospital at the start of the first episode. No gloves, no mask. Then he touched his face several times (when leaving the hospital and in his house). If it had been coronavirus, the series would be 20 minutes long.
The Final Say
This blog post is just a joke, but let me give you a serious piece of advice: if you’re in a country that is not on lockdown, please stay home. Coronavirus is a serious disease. Chinese people created 16 hospitals to fight it, all Europe is closed down… this is no joke.
And if you own a company and your employees are going to their workplace, let me tell you something: the life of your employees is at risk. Let me say that again. The life. Of your employees. Is at risk.
They are risking their lifes for a salary.
Is it worth it?
Stay at home, wash your hands and try to have some fun!
